In the 1960s the Israeli Ordnance Corps refitted its M4A1 Sherman tanks with the French 105mm CN-105-F1 tank gun. The upgraded vehicles were redesignated M51s. The heavier gun needed a muzzle brake to tame the added recoil, and a counterweight went on the rear of the turret. A 460hp diesel engine, Horizontal Volute Spring Suspension (HVSS) and wider T80 tracks improved mobility. During the Six-Day War in 1967, M51s faced T-54/55 and JS-3 tanks belonging to the Egyptian, Iraqi and Syrian armies. Their 105mm gun could engage these opponents with HEAT ammunition. The M51s kept serving until they were retired in the early 1980s.
