In 1948, the newly founded State of Israel had almost no armored fighting vehicles. Many countries with tanks refused to sell them abroad, which left Israel with very few options. It obtained some derelict Sherman tanks due for scrapping, along with a few armored cars, but not enough to form a viable force. These conditions eventually led to the development of the Merkava line. After the 1948 cease-fire, several dozen Sherman tanks of various types were bought from around the world and standardized on a production line in Israel as the M-50 Sherman. Israel later bought the British Centurion, which was rebuilt to Israeli specifications on the same line. The country still depended on other nations for armor, and shipments of requested items were sometimes blocked by circumstances beyond its control. Requests for modifications were sent to the production line
