A 1:500 scale model of the battleship USS North Carolina (BB-55). The kit has 144 parts and measures 17 3/4 inches long. It is molded in gray and includes a display stand and decals for both the Washington and the Carolina. The North Carolina was the lead ship of a class of 35,000-ton battleships, built at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. She drew so much attention during her trials in New York Harbor that she earned the nickname The Showboat. When she was commissioned on April 9, 1941, she was considered the world's greatest sea weapon. She carried nine 16-inch/45 caliber guns in three turrets and twenty 5-inch/38 caliber guns in ten twin mounts. Her wartime crew was 144 commissioned officers and 2,195 enlisted men, including 86 Marines. In her modern version, the catapult-launched float planes have been replaced by helicopters for observation work. The North Carolina went to the Pacific in June 1942 and joined the Guadalcanal campaign that year, covering the first landings and taking part in the Battle of the Eastern Solomons in August 1942.
