Convair's B-36 Peacemaker was the largest combat aircraft in the world, weighing 385,000 pounds. It entered service in 1948 and served as the primary nuclear weapons delivery aircraft of Strategic Air Command until jet-powered Boeing B-52s replaced it beginning in 1955. Four General Electric J-47 turbojets, mounted in pods beneath the outer wings, supplemented six 3,500 hp Pratt & Whitney engines. Together they brought the bomber past 435 mph over target. Snap-action bomb-bay doors replaced the older sliding doors and open or close in two seconds. Pressurized crew compartments forward and aft of the bomb bay held fifteen men, including a four-man relief crew. A four-wheeled cart traveled between compartments through a 25-inch pressurized tunnel that runs the full 85-foot length of the all-metal, circular middle fuselage. The airframe is 162 feet long with a 230-foot wingspan and carries a bomb load of 84,000 pounds.
