After the Zero Model 21 (A6M2) won major victories over Allied forces in the first half of the Pacific War, the Model 32 (A6M3) arrived in summer 1942. It used a Sakae 21 engine and had an 11m wingspan with clipped wingtips. Top speed rose, but range dropped sharply, so the Model 22 (A6M3) was rushed into development. It restored the 12m wingspan and folding wingtips for maneuverability, and new wing fuel tanks brought range back to 2,560km. The Model 22a (A6M3a), armed with long-barreled cannons, also entered production. From early 1943 the Zeros were deployed mainly to the Solomon Islands, where they fought fierce battles with US fighters.
