When the United States invaded Iraq in 2003, it deployed its newest M1A2 Abrams main battle tanks, and they stayed in use through the occupation that followed. Threats from RPGs and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in cities led to the Tank Urban Survival Kit (TUSK I) upgrade in 2004. It added reactive armor on the hull sides, underside armor against land mines, an M2 machine gun above the main gun barrel, infrared crew cameras and an external telephone for talking with accompanying infantry. TUSK II went further with tile-shaped reactive armor on the turret and hull sides, an armored shield for the commander and a rear-view camera. A field depot could fit a kit in about 12 hours, and tanks carried different features. Because of the reactive armor, TUSK kits could only be installed in theater. The Tamiya 1/35 scale model is built from new data, which makes it the best M1A1 kit in the model world.
