DKW was a German motorcycle maker founded in 1919 that gained international recognition in the 1930s for finely built two-stroke racing motorcycles. During that decade, the Wehrmacht's reconnaissance units were expanding their motorized forces. The Wehrmacht was at first uninterested in DKW's two-stroke engine, but in 1938 it adopted the DKW NZ 350, an 11hp single-cylinder two-stroke medium motorcycle. Production of the NZ 350/1, a version modified for military use, began in 1940. It had a cast iron engine block, a centrifugal air filter, and braces running from the frame to an added luggage carrier. It was unsuited to heavy cross-country work, but its light weight and easy handling made it an ideal courier bike in Europe, North Africa and Russia well into the war.
