- The UH-1 Iroquois, better known as the Huey, was the first production turbine-powered helicopter. The U.S. military ordered it in 1952 as a medical evacuation and utility aircraft. Hueys saw heavy use in Vietnam, and few crews earned more recognition than Major Bruce Crandall.
- On November 14, 1965, Major Crandall, commander of A Company, 229th Aviation Battalion, flew 14 consecutive missions into a hot landing zone to deliver supplies and evacuate the wounded. He flew three different aircraft during those runs. On February 26, 2007, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for that work.
